Kenneth Rainin Foundation

A Dancer's Daring Breakthrough
Breakthrough Moment with Jo Kreiter and Flyaway Productions
Jo Kreiter is a choreographer and social activist who pushes the boundaries of aerial dance.
In a single moment, the world can change—for a student and teacher, a researcher opening a new window into a mysterious disease, or an audience captivated by a dance performance.

These are Breakthrough Moments and we’re capturing them in a video series to highlight the groundbreaking work of Rainin Foundation grantees and the lives they change. Our newest video features artist Jo Kreiter pushing the boundaries of aerial dance.

With her company, Flyaway Productions, Jo addresses social justice issues through risk-taking performances on rooftops, building walls and fire escapes. Her hope is that by communicating a political statement through the spectacle and innovation of aerial dance, she will inspire people to create change.

We are sharing the extraordinary work of Jo Kreiter to celebrate Bay Area Dance Week, April 21-30. We honor artists like Jo who push the boundaries of creative expression.

16-18 May 2017 – In\Visible Cities Festival – Gorizia, Italy

Vertical Dance workshop for dancers, actors and performers led by Wanda Moretti/Il Posto Company.
The workshop will culminate in a vertical dance performance with the workshop participants on 18 May 2017, within the programme of In\Visible Cities – Urban Multimedia Festival.

SHIFTING PLACES is a workhsop within the vertical city, within the possibility of feeling completely immersed in the world and slightly moving it. Vertical dance offers us the freedom of dancing everywhere and gives back a testimony of a vision of the cities as an accessible and completely open space.

SHIFTING PLACES is an artistic practice that merges itself in the landscape, which uses the body as a communication tool, realising a performance in view of constructing temporary communities.

SHIFTING PLACES is a vertical practices’ workshop that, starting from the observation of the so called “migrant spaces” ie the spaces that constantly change in the cities, aims to reestablish the primary bonds between space and the community of its inhabitants.
We will then explore the ideas of territory and the spaces in which we feel more strongly connected so that we can give all this back in an artistic form.

Il Posto Company
Il Posto is the first Italian company specialising in site-specific performances on vertical places. It was founded in 1994 by choreographer Wanda Moretti and musician Marco Castelli with the aim of creating performances on vertical spaces combining dance, architecture and music, mixing the dramaturgy of the show with the performing spaces, thus creating new ideas and interactions.
Wanda Moretti is a choreographer and researcher who, in 1990, was the first dancer in Italy to experiment vertical dance, creating performances in which space and movement fuse together in an unique vision.

Dear friends,

We hope you're enjoying the spring sunshine! It's been a busy few months for us at Scarabeus - here's what we've been up to.

EXODUS - Take Part at Keys Meadow Primary
We have just completed a pilot version of our new education project focusing on issues surrounding refugees and migration with Keys Meadow Primary School in Enfield. 60 students and 20 families used images, stories and objects to discuss ideas of home and belonging. A short film created by Chloe Plumb can be seen here.

We look forward to working with Keys Meadow again this summer on a new performance on the same theme. EXODUS - Take Part will continue this autumn in schools across London and the South Coast.

Of Such Stuff Were Our Great Grandmothers Made
We are very pleased to have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a new project with Parliament Hill School looking at the history of the women's vote. The project will begin in Autumn 2017 and continue to the end of the school year, culminating in a public performance. Watch this space for more updates!

Flying Into Physics
We have also received funding from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation for a schools' education project using aerial skills to explore the physics of motion. This exciting new programme will work with four primary schools over 12 months and is supported by PHF's Arts Based Learning Fund.

Flying Families
Our Flying Families project for parents with children aged 3-10 supported by Elthorne Pride finished at the weekend, and our parents and children had a great time flying using cocoons and taking part in outdoor activities. For information about future family activities, keep an eye on our Facebook page.

DEPTHS OF MY MIND, our 2016 touring production, will be touring again in Autumn 2017 and Spring 2018 - watch our website and newsletters for further information and dates!
